Biosketch

Jonathan Knisely is an Associate Professor in Yale University School of Medicine's Department of Therapeutic Radiology. He sees patients with benign and malignant tumors that arise in or spread to the brain to discuss the role that radiotherapy can play in the management of these conditions. His area of particular expertise is in the use of radiation to treat brain tumors.

Treatment for individual patients may involve stereotactic radiosurgery using the Gamma Knife, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, brachytherapy, and other methods designed to maximize the chance of tumor control and preserve quality of life. Dr. Knisely takes particular care in the design and supervision of the radiation treatment of patients with brain tumors; image fusion between MRI and CT has been used at Yale for planning radiotherapy treatments to the brain since 1996. Dr. Knisely is active in the clinical research efforts of the Yale Brain Tumor Center and is Yale’s Principal Investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). His other research interests include hypoxia in brain tumors and the use of radiation sensitizers to maximize radiation’s effect on tumors.
